North Vernon man facing rape charge

JENNINGS COUNTY — A Jennings County man faces a preliminary charge of rape after North Vernon police investigated a report of battery early on the morning of Feb. 5.

Derian Michael Gresham, 26, of North Vernon was booked into the Jennings County Jail on Jan. 7 on that charge.

Gresham’s arrest stems from an investigation that started at 2:25 a.m. Jan. 5 when North Vernon officers reported to a report of a battery at an undisclosed location and spoke with the victim, according to a news release from Sgt. Isaac Barkes.

Barkes, the department’s public information officer, reported police were able to determine the assault had been sexual in nature. Police were then able to locate Gresham and establish probable cause to arrest him after he was interviewed.

Gresham later also consented to providing a DNA sample, Barkes reported.

This is an open investigation and ongoing, and further information may be released at a later date as it becomes available, Barkes reported.
