Sgt. Keith Messer of the North Vernon Police Department responded to a 911 call from a pregnant woman who said she was going into labor. With the dispatched ambulance nowhere in sight, Messer delivered Katie Skelton’s son at her home.

Out of about 2,000 schools and 200,000 students who entered the 1999 Destination Germany contest, Hauser High School German students earned one of the top prizes, the DaimlerChrysler Award of Excellence. One of the 90 Hauser students who participated, junior Lachelle Shoaf won a three-week, all-expense paid study trip to Washington, D.C. and Germany.

The Columbus Jaycees honored two city residents with awards for community service during a meeting at the Holiday Inn motel. William Folkert was presented the Distinguished Service Award and Keith Moore was named the Outstanding Boss of the Year.
