Letter: Caitlin Clark is terrific, but she’s no ‘Pistol Pete’

I am a great fan of Iowa Hawkeyes basketball star Caitlin Clark. She is an amazing athlete and deserves everything she has accomplished. I hope she plays professionally in Indiana where we can see her perform on a high level.

But let’s look at Clark’s college career vs. Pete Maravich, whose all-time college scoring record he set playing for Louisiana State University Clark recently surpassed.

I saw Pete, nicknamed “Pistol Pete,” play a number of times since I went to college in the south. He also was an amazing player and athlete as well. Keep in mind that Pete could only play three years of college basketball because the NCAA would not let freshmen play varsity basketball in those days. Also, there was no 3-point shot in that era.

Caitlin played in 130 games to break Pete’s record. Pete played in 83 games. Caitlin averaged 32 points a game and Pete 44.3 a game. Caitlin did lead in assists at 11 a game where Pete averaged 6 a game.

The one fundamental that will never be equaled was Pete’s ball-handling skills. He was years ahead of his time. The best ball handler of all time!
