Columbus man pleads guilty to hit-and-run death

SEYMOUR — A Columbus man recently entered a guilty plea to leaving the scene of a fatal crash resulting in death and leaving the scene of a personal-injury crash resulting in catastrophic injury, both Level 4 felonies.

On Thursday afternoon, 29-year-old Tre Xavier Vires learned his fate when he was sentenced to 12 years in prison by Jackson Circuit Judge Richard W. Poynter.

Poynter suspended two years of the sentence and gave Vires four days credit for time served.

The incident that led to Vires’ arrest began at 10:46 p.m. March 24, 2023, when the Seymour Police Department received a report of an unconscious person lying in the roadway in the 600 block of South Vine Street.

When officers arrived, they located the male victim, later identified as Charles Layman, 73, of Seymour, with no signs of life. A short time later, another 911 call came into dispatch where an individual later identified as Layman’s daughter, Tiffany Brewer, 33, of Seymour, reported she and her father had been hit by a vehicle.

Officers began lifesaving measures on Layman before Jackson County Emergency Medical Services personnel and Seymour Fire Department personnel arrived. Layman and Brewer were then both taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, where Layman was pronounced dead. Brewer was treated for injuries to her face, hand and leg.

The following Sunday and Monday, investigators received information about the driver of the vehicle that had left the scene of the crash and information about where the suspect vehicle was possibly located.

On March 27, 2023, investigators conducted an interview with Vires along with his attorney before arresting him on felony charges.

In Indiana, a Level 4 felony carries a potential prison sentence of two to 12 years with an advisory sentence of six years upon conviction.
