South Decatur wins first baseball sectional in nearly a half-century

OSGOOD — South Decatur won a pair of games on Monday to capture its first baseball sectional title in 48 years.

The Cougars beat Waldron 4-0 in the semifinals and Southwestern (Shelby) 4-1 in the final of the Class A Jac-Cen-Del Sectional. South Decatur’s only other sectional titles came in 1972 and 1976.

Devin Pate threw a three-hit shutout and struck out 13 in the win against Waldron. Brock Lane went 2 for 3 with a double and a home run to lead the offense.

JP Scudder hurled a three-hitter and struck out 11 against Southwestern. Pate went 2 for 4, and Colby Rathburn had two RBIs.

South Decatur (16-4) will play Indianapolis Lutheran in the regional on Saturday at a time and date to be determined.
