Columbus North High School graduate Allie Smith rallied to win five of the final six games of the Columbus City Tennis Tournament, and claimed a 6-4, 6-3 win and her first city title. Smith battled against Ayana Kobayashi, a graduate of Northwood College in Midland, Mich.

On the hottest day of a two-week-long heat wave, Cinergy Corp. asked Columbus-area customers to conserve as much energy as possible to prevent a power failure. The energy conservation had many residents seeking to cool off outside in pools and sprinklers, including sprinklers set up at Pence, Lincoln and Mill Race parks.

Eight-year-old Jeff Linke of Columbus was one of five winners of a pony, saddle, blanket and bridle from the Master Reeves Division of the Reliance Electric Company at the Bartholomew County 4-H Fair. Reliance spokesmen said the response from gifting the ponies was “fantastic.”
