Program to focus on Jennings County indigenous people

VERNON — The rich history of indigenous people will be the focus of an event celebrating Archaeology Month when “From Artifacts to Law: Explore Indigenous Peoples in Jennings County” is presented next week.

Local archaeologist Robert Donahue will discuss artifacts found in Jennings County and more at the event at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Jennings County Historical Society, 134 Brown St., Vernon. The discussion is free and open to the public.

According to the historical society, Donahue also will discuss the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). Since 1990, Federal law has provided for the protection and return of Native American human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony. By enacting NAGPRA, Congress recognized that human remains of any ancestry “must at all times be treated with dignity and respect.”
