Brian’s picks

* Local journalist and novelist Glenda Winders regularly presents history with a heartbeat at her Progressive Preservation Talks for the nonprofit Landmark Columbus Foundation. In her series, she has included everything from architects Harry and Ben Weese’s sibling rivalry to McDowell Education Center designer John Carl Warnecke’s love affair with Jacqueline Kennedy. Winders steps to the podium again Thursday at the Columbus Area Visitors Center, 506 Fifth St. in downtown Columbus to highlight the design background of Parkside Elementary School, completed in 1962 by Norman Fletcher. An addition was created in 1990. The event will begin with a reception at 6:30 p.m. with light refreshments from Swine and Dine.

* Look, the only marathon that has ever been a part of my life has been the gas station for car fill-ups. But I have regularly attended the Mill Race Marathon Finish On Fourth After Party free gathering that includes live music, food, games, a beer garden, the awards ceremony, and the announcement of the grand prize winner of a Cummins-powered Dodge Ram 2500 Crew Cab truck at 3 p.m. downtown. That last element alone has been known to attract several thousand people (see photo here for proof). This year’s post-race party begins at 9 a.m. and runs through 3 p.m., once again along Fourth Street.
