John “Sonny” Cyrille Knue passed away on Friday, September 27, 2024 in Columbus, Indiana at the age of 90. John had been diagnosed with an aggressive blood cancer two and a half weeks earlier. He was born on January 24, 1934 in Cincinnati Ohio as the tenth child out of sixteen to Harry and Marie (Pessler) Knue. After the oldest son, Ray, and then eight sisters, John was born and thus he was given the nick name “Sonny” by his mother.
He attended grade school at a small Catholic church, St. Aloysius on-the-Ohio, in the southwestern part of Cincinnati, and graduated from St. Xavier High School. While serving in the Army in Washington D.C., he met Sue Satomi Yamamoto of Kauai, Hawaii, and they were married on February 15, 1958. After returning from the Army, John went to work as a draftsman for the Cincinnati Gas &Electric Company (now Duke Energy), later becoming the Supervisor of the Drafting Department. He earned his Associate’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati while working at CG&E.
John enjoyed spending time with family, listening to classical music (he had a beautiful singing voice, too!), watching sports especially his favorite teams (Notre Dame, Ohio State, Bengals, and the Reds), solving Sudoku puzzles, building jigsaw puzzles, collecting stamps, and eating his nightly bowl of Neapolitan ice cream.
A Memorial Service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 3201 Central Ave., Columbus, Indiana on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 11am. Visitation will be at 10am until the start of the service. Inurnment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Cincinnati, and will take place at a later date, yet, to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Grace Lutheran Foundation.
John remarried in 2018 and is survived by his second wife Linda Martin-Knue; his six children with Sue: Dave (Cathy) Knue, Gregory (Leona Kushi) Knue, Patricia (Mark) Stepper, Alan (Charles) Knue, Chris Knue, and Claire (Rick) Knue; grandchildren: Josh (Mayra) Blaylock, Allyson Knue, Kellynn Knue, Daveen (Nick) Knue, Tyler Knue, and Lena Knue; three great grandchildren, WillO Cook, Lana Callahan and Avery Cook; four step daughters: Karen (Brian) Rinderle, Betsy (David) Angyal, Jean (Richard) Courter, and Paula (Richard) Pollard; and five of his siblings: Mary Ann Spille, Martha (Ron) Lauck, Vince (Diane) Knue, Ed (Vickie) Knue, and Paul (Peggy) Knue.
John was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sue; parents Harry and Marie (Pessler) Knue; and siblings Ray Knue, Ruth Schilling, Sylvia Maurer, Doris Maurer, Helen Guerrierre, Monica Paff, Rita Knue, Bobbie Jo Skilbeck, Joe Knue, and Donald Knue.
