East blanks Jeff, wins HHC title

JEFFERSONVILLE — Columbus East went into the final day of the regular season Saturday knowing it needed at least a win at Jeffersonville and a Floyd Central loss or tie at Bedford North Lawrence to win the Hoosier Hills Conference boys soccer title.

The Olympians got both of those things. Their 5-0 victory against the Red Devils, coupled with Floyd Central’s 3-3 tie at BNL gave East the outright HHC crown.

“We were trying to get top three, but to win it is pretty special for the group,” first-year East coach Sam LaVelle said. “That’s great this first year with a young-ish team, to accomplish something like that.”

The Olympians (7-7-1, 5-1) got a hat trick from Luis Ceballos and the other two goals from Ian Scholl. Emilio Quintero Aguirre had two assists, and Santiago Gonzalez, Scholl and Ronan Maier all added one assist.

Ryder Meek recorded the shutout in goal.
