At least 271 people registered to vote in past two weeks

At least 271 people in Bartholomew County registered to vote for the upcoming presidential election over roughly the past two weeks, according to county records.

As of Tuesday morning, 53,724 people were registered to vote in Bartholomew County, up from 53,453 on Sept. 23, according to records with the Bartholomew County Clerk’s Office.

The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming election was Monday.

By comparison, there were 53,434 registered voters in the county for the 2020 presidential election and 55,491 for the 2016 presidential election.

However, the number of registered voters for this year’s election may increase in the coming days, as Bartholomew County Clerk Shari Lentz said her office is still processing some voter registration applications that came in through the online voter registration portal ahead of Monday’s deadline.

“Those people will be processed in the next day or two,” Lentz said.

Local party officials are expecting a large turnout in the upcoming general election.

Bartholomew County Democratic Party Chair Ross Thomas said the nomination of Vice President Kamala Harris for president “brought a new level of energy” to the party.

He also said there is considerable interest in the races for Indiana governor and Indiana attorney general.

“I’m expecting high turnout,” Thomas said. “…I think Democrats are energized in this state.”

Bartholomew County Republican Party Chair Luanne Welmer said local Republicans are “excited” about the upcoming election. She said the presidential race, as well as local races, are generating a lot of interest.

“Absolutely, we are expecting a high turnout,” Welmer said. “Republicans are excited. We’re excited for the presidential race, as well as our local races.”
