Exhibit Columbus kicks off symposium on Thursday

Exhibit Columbus will debut its fifth cycle Thursday and Friday with this year’s symposium taking place downtown in three venues, allowing attendees to connect with the Miller Prize recipients, the university design teams and the high school design team.

The symposium will explore ideas related to the curatorial theme, Yes And, by highlighting improv and stand-up comedy as a way to connect with people and the environment.

Registration is free and includes four keynote events.

On Thursday, the event opens at 9 a.m. at The Commons with a keynote conversation: Meet the Miller Prize Recipients, with an introduction by curators Rasul Mowatt and Too Black.

This year’s Miller Prize recipients are:

  • Adaptive Operations (Chicago)
  • AD—WO (New York)
  • Studio Barnes (Miami)
  • Studio Cooke John (New York)

At 10:30 a.m., beginning at The Commons, attendees will meet Studio Barnes, with an introduction by curatorial partners Could be Design, followed by a site visit to the Jackson Street Parking Garage.

At 1:30 p.m. Thursday, attendees will meet the University Design Research Fellows, with a conversation moderated by curators Could Be Design and Preservation Futures, followed by meeting AD—WO, with an introduction by curatorial partners Rasul Mowatt and Too Black, and a site visit to the former Irwin Block Building.

There will be a reception at 5:15 p.m. Thursday at The Commons featuring a cash bar and light snacks followed by a comedy showcase at 5:45 p.m. featuring Rashika Jaipuriar, Mat Alano-Martin, Kelly Collette.

On Friday, a keynote lecture is planned at 9 a.m. at The Crump by Julia McMorrough followed by attendees meeting Adaptive Operations with an introduction by curatorial partners Preservation Futures, followed by the site visit to The Crump.

At 12:30 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church fellowship hall, there will be a panel discussion with curatorial partner Mila Lipinski, the High School Design Team, team coordinator Spencer Steenblik and BCSC C4 teacher Darin Johnson, and special conversation with BCSC STEM coordinator Davida Harden. This will be followed by a 2 p.m. session in the same location to meet communication designers Sing-Sing, and a panel discussion with Adi Goodrich and Sean Pecknold and Landmark Columbus Foundation Creative Director Jamie Goldsborough.

At 3 p.m. Friday, attendees at First Christian will meet Studio Cooke John, with an introduction by curatorial partner Mila Lipinski, then a site visit to the First Christian Church sunken courtyard.
