Franciscan Health Indianapolis NICU babies share Halloween spirit

INDIANAPOLIS – Nurses and staff in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Franciscan Health Indianapolis are helping babies and families share in the Halloween spirit with costumes for their tiny newborns.

Costumes include McDonald’s French Fries, a mermaid, Woodstock, Mario from Super Mario Brothers, a ladybug, an owl, a dinosaur and Snoopy.

“For families with a baby in the NICU, it is very important to be able to celebrate milestones such as a baby’s first Halloween and we want to be able to provide them with that experience,” said Lori Kraeszig, NICU manager, Franciscan Health Indianapolis. “It brings great joy to everyone to see these precious babies in their costumes and our team is very grateful to be able to provide families with a NICU baby a memory of their baby’s first Halloween.”

The Franciscan Health Center for Women & Children is the only Level III NICU servicing south central Indiana. Being a Level III NICU, the Franciscan Health Center for Women & Children is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and trained specialists to care for infants requiring neonatal intensive care.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the NICU, which was opened in 1974. Earlier this fall, a reunion carnival was held, welcoming back past NICU graduates and their families, along with staff who have been part of the journey for the past 50 years.
