Shield students with a respectful environment

The Columbus and Bartholomew County community is special because of our longstanding tradition of working together to achieve remarkable things. Time and again, we come together to create opportunities for growth, face tough challenges, and celebrate each other’s successes. Regardless of our individual political views, we regularly and collectively focus on what is best for our community. This spirit of collaboration and mutual respect is what makes us unique and it is one of the most valuable gifts we can pass on to our children.

As we approach Election Day, we are reminded of the importance of supporting a positive and respectful environment for all in the days and weeks after the election. In particular, our schools are places where students, staff, and families come together to learn, grow, and rise to the challenge of high expectations—no matter our backgrounds or beliefs. While we support constructive debate and discussion of differing viewpoints, school should be a place where all students feel safe and welcome.

In times of heightened attention to the world around us, we have an opportunity to show our children what it means to be a caring and understanding community. We encourage you to take some time at home to talk with your children about the importance of kindness and respect in the days after the election, regardless of who wins. By showing empathy and listening to others, even when we don’t agree, we strengthen the foundation of our community.

As leaders, educators, and families, we know that our influence extends beyond this election. Each of us plays a vital role in helping our young people learn to value others, to seek understanding, and to build bridges. Together, we can help our students develop the confidence to share their voices respectfully and the courage to treat others with dignity.

Thank you for joining us in fostering a culture where everyone is valued and respected.
